The Canadian Drag Icon Talks Career, Creativity, and a Cultural Homecoming

From Canada’s Drag Race Season 1 to Canada vs. the World, Tynomi Banks has solidified herself as a force in the drag scene, captivating audiences with her high-energy performances and modelesque glamour. Drawing inspiration from legends like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Grace Jones, she’s a powerhouse on stage and an icon in Toronto’s nightlife.

Now, Tynomi is heading to Windsor for a truly special occasion—a one-night-only cultural reunion celebrating 30 years of the House of Venus at The Temple Ballroom. This extraordinary event will feature a screening of Venus Envy: The House of Venus Story, performances from legendary artists, and a disco dance party to cap off the night. Before she takes the stage, Tynomi sits down with THISisDRAG.com to talk about life after Drag Race, her artistic journey, and what fans can expect from this historic event.

THISisDRAG.com: Your career has soared since Canada’s Drag Race Season 1 and Canada vs. the World. How has your drag evolved since being on the show?
Tynomi Banks: Being on Drag Race has been a game-changer for my art! Meeting fellow queens and seeing their styles had a huge impact on my own drag. Social media has played a role too—with feedback from fans and queens alike inspiring me to evolve. And let’s be real: getting older has brought new interests and passions to the table, which has also influenced my performances and connection to my art. It’s been a magical journey of growth and transformation.

TiD: Your drag is inspired by icons like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Grace Jones. How do those influences shape your performance style and fashion choices?
TB: I’ve always been drawn to these icons because I grew up watching them slay the game! I admire how they’ve evolved over the years, taking risks while staying timeless. They’re true trailblazers, and their fearless approach to fashion is something I can totally relate to. They’re the ultimate queens—always pushing boundaries and staying current—and that’s what I love about them.

TiD: You’ve been a staple in Toronto’s queer nightlife for years. What’s been one of your most memorable moments or milestones in your career so far?
TB: I’ll never forget the most iconic moment: performing at World Pride with my mother in the audience—it was her first time seeing me in drag. I was on the same stage Beyoncé performed her B’Day album on just weeks earlier. As I stood on that main stage at Yonge-Dundas Square, there were three huge billboards around me, and I was on all of them. One for Spotify, one for Twitter, and one for IKEA. Just wild to think about it now.

Love is truly going to prevail. Be true to yourself and stand by your most authentic self.
— Tynomi Banks

TiD: The Temple Ballroom will be packed with an incredible lineup of performers. What can fans expect from your performance that night?
TB: When I take the stage, I’m all about creating a connection with the audience through music. I choose songs that evoke emotions—whether it’s sadness, joy, or anything in between. My goal is to leave you feeling something real, something true. To make you laugh, cry, or dance your heart out. It’s all about creating a moment that stays with you long after the curtain call.

TiD: Looking ahead, what’s next for Tynomi Banks? Any exciting projects or dream gigs on the horizon?
TB: The next chapter of Tynomi is coming! I’m super excited to share my authentic self with the world—just like my friends see me in real life. Get ready for more real, more raw, and more honest content. And I’ve got some musical magic brewing too… live performances are on the horizon, and I can barely contain my excitement!

TiD: Is there anything you’d like to add for your fans and readers of THISisDRAG.com?
TB: It is so important to be true to yourself and stand by your most authentic self. In this day and time, love is truly going to prevail.
